Times have changed for client expectations. It used to be that they would be willing to wait to receive their documents. It was OK to have documents ready in a couple of months. In the past several years there has been a trend towards getting the documents done within a couple of weeks. Why is this the case?

We now live in a society where people expect things done quickly.

When was the last time you waited in line in the grocery store? I know for me I expect to wait less than a couple of minutes. Now if I know a store takes too long to check out I will avoid that store. I now do a fair amount of shopping with Amazon because I know I can get it cheaper and the product will arrive within 2 days and I don’t have to stand in line.

We are becoming more impatient as a society. Last year the Utah Bar put out a report on the Future of Law. Their study found that the use of lawyers by the middle class has declined. They are now going without or finding different ways to have their legal needs met.

I believe that one of the reasons people are looking for different ways to handle their legal needs is because law firms take too long to handle their cases. The next five years will see even more changes in how law firms do business. Maybe now is the right time for you to evaluate how long you take to deliver documents to your clients.
